Green Thumbs: Lettuce Tips and Tricks

Despite being the key ingredient in a fresh salad, lettuce can ironically perish quickly. Implementing a few easy tips and tricks into your kitchen’s routine can save your favorite leafy greens. Here’s what we recommend.

  • Upon receiving mixed lettuce, sort through and remove damaged or wet leaves. This creates a better environment for the produce left behind, lengthening shelf life.
    • If you create your own mixes, be sure to remove any damaged exterior leaves from the head as well.
  • When storing lettuce, keep away from fruits, as they produce ethylene gas that causes lettuce to spoil quicker.
    • Apples and avocados produce an especially high level of ethylene, so store your lettuce far away from these to keep it nice and crisp.
  • For long-term storage, you can place a paper towel in the container to help absorb unwanted moisture. This should extend the shelf life by a few days.
  • Sometimes despite your best intentions, lettuce can wilt sooner than expected. Though a last ditch effort to save your produce, soaking lettuce in ice water will help it regain its crispiness.
