Just How Healthy Are Lychees Anyway?

The deliciously balanced flavor profile of lychee is already criminally underrated, but the health benefits of the Chinese fruit are practically unknown if you haven’t done the research. Luckily, we’ve done all the digging so you don’t have to! Follow along as we discuss just how healthy the red wonder really is.

  • As you may have expected, the delicate sweetness of lychee comes from sugars within the fruit. However, lychees are roughly 80% water, so they aren’t overly sugary. In fact, a quarter pound of lychee only has 17 grams of sugar. Lychees are also fairly low in calories; a quarter pound has about 70 calories.
    • It’s important to note that canned lychee have a much higher sugar content than their fresh counterparts. This is because canned lychees are stored in a sugary syrup.
  • Don’t fall for the lie that citrus is the only good source of vitamin C. In fact, a single lychee has about 9% of your recommended daily dose of vitamin C, meaning that a full cup contains 227% of your recommended dose!
  •  Lychees have some interesting antioxidants that set them apart from the crowd. First off, they contain higher than normal levels of polyphenols which improve digestion and fight diabetes. Additionally, lychees are a good source of rutin, which has been praised for its cancer fighting abilities.
  • Did you know that lychees can actually help you lose weight? It’s true! Lychees are decent source of both fiber and vitamin-B, which are known to help improve your metabolism and suppress appetites.
  • The health benefits of lychees aren’t found just in the fruit. Lychee seeds extract lowers blood-glucose levels, which prevent inflammation and fight both diabetes and obesity.
