Basil: Tips and Tricks

One of the ultimate fresh herbs, basil is an integral tool in many chef’s repertoires. The power of basil lies in its versatility; the flavor profile of the herb changes vastly in its cooked and uncooked forms. Even though basil is an everyday ingredient for a lot of us, there’s always more to learn about the little herb. Check out these tips and tricks to refresh your memory and hopefully learn some new techniques!

  • There are a few simple techniques to consistently select fresh basil. First off, always look for brightly colored green leaves that have a strong “basil” smell. Additionally, avoid any leaves that seem wilted or overly damp.
  • The most common way to store basil is to wrap it in a damp paper towel and store it in the fridge, but we’re fond of another technique; try placing the stems in a glass of water and wrapping it in a paper bag on your countertop. Generally, we’ve found that this will keep your basil freshest the longest!
  • There are many different varieties aside from the common sweet basil. If you’re looking for a unique flavor experience, check out spicy cinnamon basil, citrusy lemon basil, or anise-heavy Thai basil!

  • It’s no question that basil goes well with a ton of different ingredients, but if you’re looking to step away from classic Italian pairings like tomatoes or balsamic vinegar, try working with basil and dark chocolate!
